HTTPMail Plugin

September 10th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

The HTTPMail plugin was a plugin for the standard Apple Mail application that provided access to any web based mail that supports the HTTPMail protocol.  The plugin has been withdrawn due to the fact the Microsoft is discontinuing the HTTPMail protocol on September 1st 2009.

Efforts are still underway to decode the new Windows Live Mail protocols, but progress is slow due to lack of time to devote to the project.

The HTTPMail plugin was open sourced and is available for download from Sourceforge or github.

    I have been using Daniel’s HTTPmail for Tiger so that my macmail program can be used as an interface with hotmail. Now that Microsoft has stuck it to me so that my mac mail program will no longer work, are there any other ways I can use my mac mail program to retrieve and send through my hotmail account or am I screwed once again by microsoft? Any ideas?

    To continue getting your Hotmail mail you can use the POP3 access provided by Microsoft.

    The settings are as follows:-

    Incoming Server: pop3.live.com
    Incoming Port: 995
    SSL Encryption: yes
    Outgoing Server: smtp.live.com
    Outgoing port: 25 (use port 587 if the default port is not working)
    Authentication: yes
    TLS Or SSL: yes

    POP3 sucks you cannot sync your sent folder only the inbox. Time to ditch MSN/Hotmail.

  5. September 12th, 2009 at 14:05 | #5

    @Quint
    Another approach is to use a gmail account and set it up to download all the messages from your Hotmail account. Then you can have your cake and eat it too.

    Hi Matt, go to Mail, Preferences, Accounts, click the plus symbol at the bottom left to add the new POP3 account.

    I deleted the old account I had for hotmail, then reset up my account using those settings. It worked after that, I couldn’t get it to work trying to edit the info. A bit of a pain, but it’s nice to have my hotmail pulling into my mail once more.

    Hi Daniel,
    Thank you for the tip!
    I tried setting it as you said, but it would not work.
    Here’s what i did :
    Preferences>Hotmail account
    Incoming server : pop3.live.com
    Settings > outgoing server : smtp.live.com
    Port : 995
    Use SSL : on

    Is there something wrong in what i’ve done ?
    Thank you!
    Rabih.

    Hello,

    I could not get those settings to work either. When I create a new account, I can’t even figure out where to type all of those things in? It’s not set up exactly how the settings are given. For example “authentication: yes” When I set it up, authentication has a drop down box with choices…. yes and no is not an option. I wish this would work again….

    Thank you for your help,
    Michelle

    I have replaced my httpmail with the pop mail, but all of my folders will no longer work. ie there is no messages inside the folders.
    Is there anyway to get these back. They had all my archived messages, pictures, work related info etc. Any help would obviously be hugely appreciated.
    marc

    @shonxi
    If you removed the HTTPMail account then unless you have a backup the messages are gone. If up uninstalled the plugin without removing the account then the messages should still be there in the ~/Library/Mail folder.

    @Dieter
    Snow Leopard appears to automatically set up a POP3 account if you enter a @hotmail.com address. It has nothing to do with the plugin.

    Have you tried mBox Mail for Mac http://fluentfactory.com/mboxmail-for-mac/ ? It seems to be doing a really great job of getting Hotmail in Mac Mail.

    With windows 7 Live mail, hotmail is still using a HTTP-server:

    http://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v2.0.0/sync.aspx

    Daniel, can you look into this?

  22. December 5th, 2009 at 21:26 | #22

    Wow, definitely works perfect, and more than that. As soon as I started setup, the rain stopped, clouds disappeared and the sun started shining!
    Awesome!

    Hi guys, I had it all set up as shown above and everything’s been fine for ages (about a year) then yesterday at 10pm my smtp server for hotmail has rejected my address and so I can’t send any mail, receiving is absolutely fine. At a loss. Pls help!!!

    Got MAC’s mail to work fine. Be patient. It was frustrating – went through it 4 times before FINALLY hotmail’s live.com sent a message with a required click-through to a goptcha – after that it ran smoothly, if slower than yahoo or gmail – no plug-ins, nothing with Snow Leopard 10.6.5

    BE PATIENT – hotmail will send a little welcome message but you need their other email with a link to a goptcha before you’ll finalize it – took me 4 tries 10.6.5

    It’s asking for the user name and password for your Hotmail account.

    Example: args@hotmail.com

    Username: args (or args@hotmail.com)
    Password: -password for args@hotmail.com-

    Hi I just set up my MSN mail on MAC Mail by just entering my email address and password. All seamed to work fine except it only download about 30 messages from like 5 years ago. Recent ones are not being downloaded from the server. I can send messages OK and if I right click on the In Box there is an option that says “Account info” if I click on this it wll go and find all 5000 (yes I know) emails I have on the MSN server. But I don’t know how to get them into the inbox? and also new emails don seem to be coming into my inbox either. Can someone help?
